Uruguay
One of the smallest counties of South America located between Argentina and Brasil. With a surface area of 172.215 km2 and a population of about three million people it's population density is rather low. Of those three milion people about half lives in the capital Montevideo.
Uruguay has a subtropic climate and has temperatures comparable with Florida and Spain in summer. Maximum temperatures can rise up to 42 C (december - february) in the North of the country. During summer the Uruguayan people love to stay at one of the beautiful sand beaches of Montevideo or one of the many beach resorts like Punta del Este, Piriápolis en Atlántida, all located on the Rio de la Plata (River Plate).
Besides these beach resorts on the Rio de la Plata there are numerous other holiday possibilities, like beach resorts at the Atlantic Ocean (i.e. La Paloma), Thermal Spas in the North-West of Uruguay, a large lake district in the centre of the country, Montevideo and a lot of other historical places (i.e. Colonia del Sacramento).
The people are very open and hospitable. Traditionally 'mate' is the national "tea". A calabash is filled with dried herbs ('yerba') and poured with boiling water. The water with the extracted substances from the herbs are being drunk through a 'bombilla'. The calabash and the water are handed through the group, which makes this a typical social activity. When you are invited for an 'asado', prepare yourself for a abundant barbeque, with lots of meat of high quality, prepared on a 'parillero' (a large stone barbeque).
Uruguay has, for Latin American standards, a high average income per capita and one of the highest education levels. Together with a low criminal rate, friendly people and the good climate, Uruguay offers the ideal possibility for a great holiday.
